A SINGLE mum falsely claimed more than £9,000 in benefit when she failed to declare that she was living with a partner who was working as a self-employed person.
Magistrates at Warrington heard that Lianne Marie Lowcock, 22, of Kilshaw Road, Burtonwood, claimed income support, housing benefit and council tax benefit as a single mother of one child.
However, it was found that she had been living with her partner who was self- employed, buying and selling car parts.
She was overpaid housing benefit of £8,400.21 and council tax benefit of £1,100.25 between August 2007 and May last year.
Miss Lowcock pleaded guilty to one charge of dishonestly producing a false document.
She was ordered to repay the money, carry out 120 hours unpaid community work and pay £100 costs.
After the hearing, Adrian Webster, the council’s benefits manager, said: “Many people assume that benefit theft applies only to those who are working for ‘cash in hand’ while claiming jobseeker’s allowance. This is not the case. All benefit theft is crime.”
