Collegiate students beat the odds

WARRINGTON Collegiate is celebrating success after 85 per cent of its Access students beat the odds to gain places at some of the country’s most prestigious universities.
It has been one of the most competitive years for school leavers as nearly 661,000 people applied to start undergraduate degrees – 69,000 more than last year.
From Access courses nationally, of the 25,555 applicants through UCAS 65 percent of students were successful in entering university. The Collegiate has seen a great
acceptance rate for its students in a number of specialities including criminology, midwifery, social work, paramedic science, teaching and physiotherapy.
Among the 90 Warrington Collegiate students flying high on the achievement of a university place is Mother of two Lily Tyrer, now on the Criminology and English programme at the
University of Liverpool.
Of her experiences at the Collegiate Lily comments: “Being a housewife and the mother of two boys, it was difficult to think about going back to school. But the Access course gave me a great chance to get back into education. It developed and refined my communications skills, analytical thinking and presentation skills – which are vital in my future career.
“I decided to study Criminology because I would like to understand the social and personal aspects of crime. I hope to continue on to do a Masters and I would like to work with UNICEF or the United Nations.
“Access to the Higher Education course has given me a chance to change my life and I’m very excited about my future prospects.”
Paul Hafren, Principal of Warrington Collegiate comments: “It is wonderful for us to report success at the collegiate. Our Access students have had a very strong showing this year and we look forward to seeing them succeed in their studies and careers further afield.
“This shows that educational opportunities exist for people at any age, and they are living proof that it’s never too late to make a change and follow a new career path.”
