The road to sports leadership

PUPILS in the 11-14 age group from across Cheshire are being invited to a conference at Warrington designed to set them on the road to sports leadership.
The conference, on May 13, at the Fearnhead campus of Chester University will be divided into five activity sessions specifically designed to test all the qualities needed to be an effective leader.
There will be a mix of practical sports application, team working, communication, coaching or leading an activity and problem solving. There will also be an opportunity to work with an athletic role model who will help the groups understand how to be a role model through giving examples from their own experiences and those of other athletes.
The hope is that students will reflect on and use the training and experiences when they return to their own schools to improve themselves as a sports leader and volunteer. They will be challenged to apply this new found learning to a volunteering programme within their own school.
Richard McDonald, sports leadership and activity co-ordinator, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for like minded children to meet and experience activities and workshops designed to support their personal development. It is also a great chance for students to find out how they can give something back to their school or community through sports leadership.”
It is estimated that 120 young leaders from high schools across Cheshire and Warrington will attend the event, co-ordinated by the Warrington School Sport Partnership (WaSSP).
Existing young leaders at keys stage 4 and 5 from William Beamont High School and Warrington Collegiate will help to facilitate the day, run workshops and train the future leaders and volunteers who attend.
