Town season ends in defeat

0

THE curtain came down on Warrington Town’s most successful season for many years with a disappointing 0-1 defeat to league runners-up Lancaster City in front of a bumper Cantilever Park crowd.
The defeat left Town finishing 9th in the Unibond Division One North, a massive improvement on recent years which have usually seen the club involved in the end of season relegation dog fight.
With little to play for other than pride, as Lancaster had already secured runners up with Halifax gaining promotion last week, the first half produced typical end of season fare in warm sunshine, with neither side creating any clear cut chances.
The second half sprang into life on the hour when Town’s prolific goal scorer Chris Gahgan, with 33 goals to his credit this season, beat the off-side trap and raced clear one on one with the keeper.
Gahgan attempted to round the keeper but was brought down but instead of seeing red the keeper was only booked, with the referee ruling it was not a clear goal scoring opportunity!
Gahgan dusted himself down at the end he had missed three previous penalty attempts and despite Gavin Salmon offering his services, Gahgan stepped up only to see his effort saved by the keeper who in reality shouldn’t have even been on the pitch!
To rub salt in the wounds Lancaster were in front within three minutes as a tame Adam Farrell free kick sailed over everyone in the box past a static Ben Connett in the Town goal.
It was a lead they never looked likely to lose as Warrington struggled to create any clear cut chances.

Pictures show Chris Gahgan racing clear and being tripped in the box.
