Students visited The Big Bang

STUDENTS from two Warrington schools were inspired about science and engineering when they visited “The Big Bang” at Manchester Central.
Year 9 pupils from Cardinal Newman Catholic High and Woolston High watched the “BBC’s Bang Goes the Theory” science show during their visit on March 12.
They were also given the chance to attend one of two workshops – either “The Secret Life of Robots” or “So You Think You Can Design A Jet Engine?”.
Some were introduced to robots when graduates from BAE Systems demonstrated the exciting projects they are working on with autonomy, sensing and biomimicry.
Other pupils saw the cutting edge technologies being developed by scientists and engineers to improve the environmental impact of air travel.
During this workshop, they selected different materials to design a virtual jet engine for themselves and explore the different properties of various materials.
The trip was organised by Aimhigher Cheshire and Warrington, one of 44 Aimhigher area partnerships working to widen participation in higher education by young people from under-represented groups.
Teresa Wong, Aimhigher Cheshire & Warrington Vocational Development Officer (Science, Engineering and Construction), said: “The Big Bang certainly inspired the pupils to get involved in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) industries.
“They thoroughly enjoyed the show and workshop at the event. They now have a new enthusiasm for and insight into the applications of science and engineering – a huge thanks to The Big Bang!”
