Memorial to 10,000 unmarked graves

A MEMORIAL could be erected to highlight the fact that there are some 10,000 people buried in common, unmarked graves at Warrington Cemetery.
The suggestion is just one that will be considered at a special meeting of the borough council’s environment and housing overview and scrutiny committee at the cemetery chapel, in Manchester Road, Warrington on Tuesday, October 6
Also under consideration will be the outcomes of a pilot improvement project recently undertaken at the cemetery to address issues such as safe access to graves, improvements in the standard of horticultural maintenance, general aesthetics and future provision of burial facilities within Warrington.
A pilot project was undertaken following a public consultation around this time last year and people attending the meeting will be asked for their views on rolling the project out across the whole cemetery.
A working group has concluded that all the outlined improvements to the cemetery would create an overall improvement of the burial facility and create much needed additional grave space in the most centrally located cemetery in the borough.
But the improvements would require increasing in the revenue budget by £85,000 a year.
Anyone with views about the cemetery is invited to the meeting at 6.30pm.

  1. I am doing my families geneology which has led me to your article dated 2/10/2009 – unmarked grave in warrington. I would appreciate it if you could advise me if, any further updated articles been made? or if you have a forwarding name and contact number in respect of the proposed action or where a list of the persons in these graves would be kept. I appreciate any help you may give me and thanking you in anticipation of your reply, Karen Roberts
