WARRINGTON’S Golden Square shopping centre has become the first major shopping centre in the UK to offer centre-wide public Wi-Fi.
High speed wireless internet is now available throughout Golden Square allowing users to access the web for business or leisure from any Wi-Fi enabled device.
From downloading and synchronizing email to uploading large presentations and films at lightening speed and even watching TV on iPlayer as fast as in the office of at home, Golden Square shoppers can now work, plan and make VoIP calls using the network while on the move.
Shoppers keen to surf the web will receive complete Wi-Fi coverage in the centre, including the mall and the Old Market Square will no breaks in coverage, making it a first for any shopping centre in the country and offering the largest area of public access broadband in the area.
The new site is great news for the 4.6 million BT Total Broadband and BT Business Broadband customers, plus O2 iPhone customers who receive inclusive minutes with their service. For both occasional and frequent users BT Openzone also offers a wide range of great value vouchers and subscriptions.
Ian Cox, marketing manager for Golden Square says: “Pioneering this cutting edge public access internet technology here at Golden Square is a great project to be involved with and we hope shoppers will experience the benefit from this immediately.
“This is another example of our investment into making the centre a destination of choice for all our customers from younger shoppers interested in online gaming and instant messaging to business users on lunch breaks.”

  1. Sort out the free car-parking (ala Trafford Centere) before putting silly schemes like this in place – oh and I would like to point out to Mr Cox that this isn’t a free “public” service – users need to subscribe to an applicable BT Openzone/BT Broadband package to actually get this!

  2. Why would people want to ‘check their emails’ , ‘uploading large presentations and films’ or ‘watch internet TV’ on while they are shopping !!! Weird or am I getting old.

It will be good for all the youngsters who hang about in town though I suppose… it will give them something to do 🙂
