A YOUNG up and coming coach who has been tipped to go all the way to the top of the Rugby League coaching ladder has been appointed by new junior summer rugby team Cheshire Cats.
Bridgewater High School graduate Ben Povey (pictured) from Stockton Heath has been appointed Director of Development and Performance at the go ahead club.
Ben aged 25 will also retain his roles as head coach of the Warrington Wolves under 13 scholarship and assistant coach to the Wolves under 18 Academy team.
Warrington Wolves Player Performance Manager Ben Lazenby has a high regard for his namesake and is sure the Cheshire Cats have recruited wisely when pointing out: “Ben Povey is a very promising young coach with lots of drive and enthusiasm. He has been involved in coaching with the Warrington Junior setup for the last few seasons and is showing improvement year on year. Ben has the potential to coach at a very high standard. With his new role he will continue his development and also instill an air of professionalism into the Cheshire Cats coaching structure.”
In addition to his duties as Head of Behaviour at Harrop Fold School in Worsley and Youth Leader at St John’s Church in Stockton Heath, Ben is eagerly looking forward to adding to his busy schedule as the Cats coaching supremo and is confident the area the Cats serve, is ripe for major Rugby League development:
‘I am relishing the challenge of taking forward the Cheshire Cats Rugby League Club. I am passionate about the development of all players I coach and believe this project will further spread the word in terms of the benefit the sport of rugby league can offer young people. I believe South Warrington is an untapped hotbed of talent and is somewhat unchartered territory in terms of rugby league developement.’
Ben’s main duties at the Cats will be to steer the club’s initial age group – the under 12s – to a successful season in the Midlands division and to set in place a coaching philosophy and structure that is very much standards driven as the club seeks to add extra age groups in ensuing years.
Cheshire Cats Chair Neil Waters is delighted with the appointment: ” We are very pleased to have secured someone of Ben’s pedigree and passion. The key message is that all parents and teachers can rest assured that the Cats will seek to impose high standards in relation to conduct on and off the field of play in addition to top level rugby coaching.”
Training for the under 12s commences at Crouchley Lane Lymm at 6.30pm on Wednesday April 8.
