Malta is a microcosm of the Mediterranean

From its North African and Arabic inAuences to the Sicilian inspired cuisine, Malta is a microcosm of the Mediterranean. Few European countries have such concentrated history and architecture in such a tiny area.
There has been an eclectic mix of influences and a roll-call of rulers over the centuries, but be in no doubt Malta is not just a notional outpost of Italy or a relic of colonial Britain. This island nation (all 316 sq km of it, comprising
the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino) has a quirky character all of its own.
From prehistoric temples, to the baroque architecture of Valletta, feasts of rabbit to fiestas of noisy fireworks, rattling buses to colourful fishing boats, this nation has loads of unique charm.
When Unesco granted World Heritage listing to Valletta, it called Malta’s capital ‘one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world’.
The city is certainly renowned for its massive fortifications and architectural excellence. Walk the quiet, narrow back streets to get a feel for everyday life. The city overlooks the impressive Grand Harbour to the Southeast and
Marsamxett Harbour to the Northwest.
The most famous name who worked in Malta has to be that of Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio. A work
once described as ‘the painting of the 17th Century’ is Caravaggio’s Beheading of St John the Baptist,
commissioned for, and still on display in the Oratory of the Co-Cathedral of St John in Valletta. Another of his famous works, St Jerome, is also in the Cathedral.
Flying time from the UK is three and a half hours and with regular Aights from Manchester, makes a great alternative
long-weekend destination. Malti and English is spoken. Currency is the Euro and British Passport holders do not
require an entry visa for stays of less than three months. Malta and Gozo has a very efficient local bus service. Taxi hire is moderate because self drive is popular. The minimum age is 23 and a UK driving licence is required. Restaurants in Malta range from the fashionable serving high quality cuisine to the more homespun, tasty and often local dishes.
