Reserves go top

WARRINGTON Town’s second XI leapfrogged three places to take over top spot following this hard fought victory over a resilient Poynton side.
After a quiet opening Town started to find some rhythm to their passing and movement with Dave Berry coming close with a shot from twenty yards. Adam Hunter then fired a shot into the side netting before what was arguably the best moment of the game resulted in Town taking the lead. The ball was worked down the right to the edge of the box and fired across and after a step over by Scott Tebb the ball ran to Dave Berry who blasted home from fifteen yards.
Town then had a strong penalty claim turned down before Poynton’s Alex Tomlinson got in a shot. Poynton’s Paul Garner plus Dave Berry and Oladipo Mahib all came close late in the half.
Once again a steady start ensued but this time Town found some rhythm more quickly. A ball was crossed from the left and after a bit of pinball in the six yard box it somehow found its way through to Adam Hunter who shinned the ball home from four yards. Not the prettiest of goals but they all count.
Poynton had a couple of long range efforts before Michael Gore forced a good save from Marcus Puncheon. The game was now end to end and Dave Shaw came to Town’s rescue when saving from close range after a Sam Davidson shot. Poynton very nearly pulled one back when seemingly from nothing the ball was heading goalward towards an empty Town net but the ball was hooked clear for a corner. A header from the resulting set piece was saved by Shaw. Once again Town were indebted to Dave Shaw with a great one on one save with Mark Faulkener with the rebound hitting the base of the right hand post before going safe. In the dying seconds Poynton were warded a penalty for an innocuous challenge. Dave Shaw got a hand to the spot kick but could not keep it out. The final whistle blew seconds after the restart.
