Students star in Wolves victory

TEENAGE rugby league ace Matty Lomax was among current and ex Priestley College, students to feature in a senior Warrington Wolves shirt after he took to the field against Swinton.
Named on the wing for the friendly game, Lomax scored a try in Wolves’ 32-26 victory.
The Warrington side included other current students Jordan Burke, James Mendeika, Anthony Whelan and James Laithwaite.
Former students in the team were Danny Martin, Tyrone McCarthy, Adam Neal and Alex Thompson.
Lomax, 18 is currently taking A Levels in Law, Sport, Business, and an AS-Level in Media alongside the Pre-Law Enrichment programme.
He said: “It was really good to get a taste of first team rugby, lining up in a team that had international players in was a real buzz. I approached the match like any other but obviously it was much faster with a greater skill level.”
Lomax admits that the strides made at senior level by Chris Riley and Kevin Penny (another former Priestley student) have inspired him to achieve more.
He said: “Chris and Kev are both big inspirations as they have established themselves in the Super League squad and are still at a young age – it makes you look up and want to be there.”
Lomax, who is balancing his studies with his commitments to the Wolves, plans to read Law at university in September.
“My main passion is my rugby and obviously I want to go as far as I can in the sport. Backing this up with good qualifications though is ideal as I’m also interested in the area of Sports Law,” he said.
