WARRINGTON South MP Helen Southworth has welcomed an announcement of £480 million from the Government to get more people involved in sport.
The funding will go directly to 46 sports – including more than £29 million to Rugby League.
The money will go to help increase participation in sports, particularly over the ages of 16 and 17, when young people often drop out of sporting activities.
Mrs Southworth (pictured) is a member of the influential Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, and has been campaigning for more grass roots investment in sports. She is also working with the Rugby Football League as part of Sport England’s Sports Fellowship scheme, which aims to promote a better understanding between the worlds of sport and politics.
Mrs Southworth said: “I am delighted that this money has been awarded by the Government. Participation in sporting activities is vitally important to everyone’s health and wellbeing. The record investment in grass roots and elite sport by the Government allowed British athletes to achieve brilliant success at the Olympics this summer, encouraging many more people to get involved in sport. “This new investment will continue to nurture our talented athletes, improve sports grounds, train more coaches and keep young people playing sport”.
