A MAN has been arrested following an incident in which a home-made bomb was pushed through a house letterbox at Warrington.
Fire crews and bomb disposal experts were called to the house in Daniel Close, Birchwood and families were evacuated from nearby homes
The bomb – a cylindrical object about the size of a bottle – did not explode.
But police set up a 50m cordon around the property and all families living within the cordon were told to leave their homes.
Fire crews from Birchwood and Warrington, including a decontamination unit, were called to the scene and stood by until Army bomb disposal experts arrived.
Police said a 30-year-old Warrington man had been arrested in connection with the incident – and was the same man who had alerted police about the bomb.
The device was found to be home-made and similar to a firework.
Borough council officials found temporary accommodation for the evacuated residents until the emergency was over.
The bomb was discovered at about 6.45pm last night (Thursday).
Police are still investigating.
