SIX people – four of them children – are now known to have been killed in a horrific multiple accident on the M6 in Cheshire.
They are all members of one family, from Llandudno, in North Wales, David Statham, 38, his wife Michelle, 33 and their children Reece, 13, Jay, nine, Nathan, 20 months and Elouise, 10 weeks.
Firefighters from Warrington were among the emergency crews sent to crash on the northbound carriageway near Sandbach.
Three lorries and two cars were involved and the Statham’s car burst into flames.
One of the lorry drivers, a 46-year-old from Portugal, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The northbound carriageway was closed throughout most of the night. It has now been reopened although police say traffic is still moving more slowly than usual.
Shortly before the crash, another man – now known to be former Warrington Rugby League star David Myers – died when his white van collided with a bridge parapet, also on the M6 northbound carriageway near Sandbach.
The possibility of a connection between the two incidents is being investigated.
Police are appealing for witnesses of either crash. Anyone who can help should call 0845 458 0000.
