WARRINGTON Town followed on from their impressive FA Trophy victory
over Chorley by hitting Ashton for six in the Liverpool Senior Cup.
Town started well, taking the lead in the fourth minute, when striker Tom Lamb picked up the free ball on the edge of the box and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way with a neat finish. Just three minutes later, Town extended their lead, when a long Richie Mottram clearance, was met by the head of Ashton centre half, Gary Doyle, who, under pressure from Kevin Towey, headed beyond his own keeper and into the empty net.
The game at this point changed and took on the feel of a training game, with Town in complete control, with the home side rarely threatening. The closest Ashton did come, was when they hit the post, in the 19th minute. It was no surprise, when Town went further ahead, when Towey finished neatly when through on goal. Just a minute later, Town were 4-0 up, when Jimmy McCarthy, scored his first goal for the club, when he curled in a shot from outside of the penalty area. Shortly afterwards, the only downside of the night occured when Tom Lamb suffered a recurrance of his recent groin injury, and was replaced by Carl Rendell. On the stroke of half time, Town went further ahead, when Towey was on hand to finish off, when the referee played advantage, after McCarthy was fouled in the box.
The second half saw the introduction of former Town goalkeeper Neil McCormack into the Ashton goal, and it was McCormack who denied Rendell, with a smart save early in the half. Town went close soon after, seeing the ball scrambled away from the goalmouth. Town took their foot of the gas and allowed the home side into the game, Mottram being called into action to deny the home side with a save onto the bar. It was a surprise, however, when Ashton scored their goal, when a missed punch by Mottram flew straight into the net. Town picked their game back up and soon went close once again, when McCarthy poked narrowly wide, when through on goal. The sixth and final goal came in the 90th minute, when Rendell burst through and dispatched an unstoppable drive past McCormack.
Warrington’s reward is a mouthwatering home tie against Burscough from the Conference North in the quarter-finals with the tie scheduled in November.
