Town inflict cup shock

WARRINGTON Town travelled to higher league Cammell Laird and ended a run of four consecutive defeats by inflicting a 2-1 Cheshire cup shock on their hosts.
Both sides started cautiously, with the first chance falling to Laird’s Eddie Jebb, who blasted over when well placed, and shortly afterwards striker Luke Holden should have scored when he shot across the face of goal.
Town got back into the game and the 17th minute introduction of combative substitute Dave Tickle saw Town add a bite to their midfield that had been missing in recent games. One minute later Town were ahead when the ball found its way out to right winger Phil Hadland, who scored with a low angled drive into the bottom corner from the corner of the six yard box. This seemed to instil confidence in Town, who were now in complete control of the game, and went looking for a second goal, striker Dave Thompson glancing a header wide and Danny Toone seeing his free kick go narrowly over the bar, went closest for Town.
Two minutes into the second half, Town went further ahead, when after pressing forward, recent signing Thompson, scored his first goal for the club, with an angled shot that went in off the post. Lairds began to push forward looking to get back into the game, but a combination of weak finishing, excellent goalkeeping and excellent defending denied the home side. Lairds came close to scoring in the 60th minute when captain Andy Thomas was on hand to clear off the line.
Laird did pull one goal back when winger Ollie James saw his cross sail in after keeper Richie Mottram slipped.
Substitute Tom Lamb, making his first appearance of the season after injury, went close with virtually his first touch of the season, when his chipped effort went narrowly over the bar, with keeper Richard Whiteside nowhere.
Pictures show Dave Tickle back in action with Town after coming on as a 17th minute substitute and Dave Thompson jumping for joy with his first goal for the club.
