House builders cut jobs

REDROW Homes is to axe 550 jobs nationwide in response to an “unprecedented” decline in the property market.
The company’s north west headquarters at Preston Brook, near Warrington, will be one of two of its 10 offices to close.
A number of other house builders, including Bovis, have also announced cutbacks as the credit crunch hits demand for new houses. They fear no improvement in the situation in the immediate future.
But a survey of estate agents reveals a more optimistic view.
Almost two-thirds of estate agents expect house prices to stop falling within 12 months as the property market begins to improve.
About 61 per cent of agents questioned by high street bank Abbey thought the property market would improve within a year.
