£1m fundraising campaign launched

A CAMPAIGN to raise £1 million to build a new state-of-the-art centre has been launched by a Warrington charity that has been in its current premises since 1924.
Warrington, Widnes and District Society for the Blind is currently based in the Rex Furness Centre in Museum Street.
But a new building is needed, according to campaign organisers, as the current facilities are inadequate, the building is in a poor state of repair and access is limited.
Society transport co-ordinator Bob Verey said the current premises were opened in the 1920s by Rex Furness – a local man blinded by a works accident.
The centre had expanded over the years and now more than 80 blind and partially sighted people enjoy activities there each week including crafts, social fun, advice sessions and entertainment.
Bob said: “The age of the building is a problem. It really needs renovation. Access is off Museum Street and there are no ramps, so it is difficult for people in wheelchairs.
“The corridor from the front door to the main hall is about 30 yards long and very narrow, so access is difficult. There are also no toilet facilities for disabled people.”
There was no parking on the site and minibuses bringing people to the centre were often moved on by parking wardens or police.
The centre currently had only one main room, but the society would like to have additional rooms or a room that can be sub-divided to allow different activities.
Bob said it is hoped that additional facilities could be offered in a new building such as computers with magnified screens so that blind and partially sighted people could use them.
A new building group has been formed to start the fundraising and look for possible sites. They are hoping to attract businesses, possible voluntary sector partners and sponsors to assist and anyone able to help should contact Bob or social manager Gail Bretherton on 01925 632700.
