Town sunk by Lairds

NEITHER side had much to gain from this end of season fixture, but both played a fast game from start to finish.
Argentine keeper Diego Bassanini was called into action in the very first minute to push a Chris Melia shot round the post.
Tony Rendell then crashed a free-header against the post for the away side, as the game became a fast paced battle with little end product from either side.
Thomas Lamb showed glimpses of inspiration for The Yellows as he probed to find a breakthrough, but it was Lairds who were to strike the only goal of the game when Rendell steered a header past Bassanini from a driven corner.
The goal seemed to stir Town into life as they looked the most likely side to register up until half time.
Lamb again was at the heart of every Warrington attack, this time beating two defenders to find Karl Brown whose shot was easily saved by Paul Whitefield.
The second half saw the introduction of Scot Williams who proved a constant thorn in the side for Lairds throughout the second half.
Francis Smith and Thomas Spearitt both saw efforts drift just wide of target, before Carl Rendell saw a header tipped over and Lamb steered an effort over the bar from a couple of yards out.
The Wire’s best chance of the game fell to Rendell soon after when his quick turn and shot shaved the post with the Lairds’ keeper beaten.
The visitors then hit the woodwork when a deflected shot had Bassanini beaten.
Despite a huge effort from Town it was not enough and Lairds went back to the Wirral with all three points.
