Lairds sink Town

Cammell Lairds 2 Warrington Town 0
PAUL Moore’s side suffered another defeat, this time away to a strong Cammell Lairds side.
In blustery conditions the side started the stronger, utilising a long ball game to good effect.
It was lairds who had the ball in the net first to, but John Moore’s 30-yard thunderbolt was ruled out, as another player obstructing Diego Bassanini was deemed offside.
That seemed to shock Town into life and they nearly broke the deadlock when Tom Spearitt saw his header cleared off the line.
Bassanini was called into action next, flicking a driven shot from Thomas Rooney over the bar.
It took until the 38th minute for the deadlock to be broken when good work down Lairds’ left culminated in Eddie Jebb rising unopposed to nod into the net.
The Wire were then forced into a change as Andy Thomas limped off to be replaced by Scott Williams.
As the half drew to a close it was Warrington who were applying the pressure and nearly got back into the game when Kevin Towey and Gavin Lynch both had efforts cleared off the line.
Warrington started the second half in a similar vein with Lynch and Spearritt again going close.
On the hour mark disaster struck as Town gifted Lairds a second from a position of no apparent danger.
Steve Everett headed back to Diego Bassanini but it fell short of its intended target and was intercepted by Thomas Rooney who rounded the keeper and fired home.
From this point on the game effectively ended as a contest as Town ran out of ideas and Lairds were content to sit back.
A raft of changes for both sides didn’t alter the game much and Warrington went away empty handed again.
