Back on the trail of cup glory

WARRINGTON Town got back to winning ways in the Liverpool Senior Cup when they travelled to Poulton Victoria to take on high flying East Villa.
It was the home side, unbeaten so far this season, who started the brightest, but thanks to a combination of poor finishing and good defending they failed to take an advantage.
Town were able to soak up the early pressure and respond in kind with good efforts from Phil and Graeme Mitchell.
Keeper Danny Morton was called into action soon after, when he produced a fine save to deny the home side.
Villa did take the lead in the 41st minute when Paul McGuiness slotted home from a tight angle.
The Wire seemed to have been rallied by the half time team talk, as they began the second half with a real purpose and winger Andy Potter went close after a mazy run.
Lee Thompson was introduced off the bench to give Town a different dimension in their attack, and just nine minutes after coming on, he drew The Wire level with a deflected effort that found the bottom corner.
Thompson proved to be making a real difference, as two minutes later he was able to put the away side in front, after slotting home at the second attempt.
Town keeper Morton was busy again as Villa fought back, first he produced a fine stop, but was helpless when McAllister deflected McGuiness’ shot onto the post and out to safety.
Thompson again carried the fight to Villa, having Warrington’s next effort following a brilliant run from his own half.
Town made sure of the win with the last kick of the game, when good from Thompson again allowed Phil Mitchell to finish and put the tie to bed.
A glamour tie could be next in store for Town as they are now in the quarterfinals and could potentially face Liverpool, Everton or Tranmere.
