WARRINGTON Town crashed to their fourth straight defeat at the hands of Grantham Town in their latest Uni Bond League Division One South clash.
A single goal for the away side was enough to wrestle all three points off The Wire, who travel to Fleetwood Town on Tuesday night in the League Challenge Cup.
Both sides began the game well at Grantham, and indeed it was the home side that had the first effort, which drifted narrowly wide.
Town’s first effort of the game came from winger Kevin Hannon, who had his curling effort saved by Mario Zacchardi in the Grantham goal.
Grantham began to exert a period of sustained pressure, but thanks to good saves from John Bagnall and some poor finishing, the scores remained level.
The Wire’s next chance fell to James Edwards who forced a good save from Zacchardi.
Grantham should have taken the lead in the 33rd minute, but for a goal line clearance from Town Midfielder Dave Tickle.
The last chance of the half fell to Town striker Lee Thompson, who had his shot cannon back off the post.
As the second half began, Warrington started the brightest with midfielder Mike Ellison forcing another save out of Zacchardi.
Then came the game’s flash point as the away side looked to have a clear penalty waved away when Lee Thompson was pulled back in the area.
To add insult to injury, two minutes later Grantham took the lead as midfielder Brendan Mcdaid met a corner and finished from close range.
Town upped their game to try and find an equaliser, and went close through Phil Mitchell shortly after, forcing Zacchardi into another good save.
The last good chance for Town fell to James Edwards, who saw his drive go narrowly wide of the goal after good work down the left by captain Chris Fitzsimmons.
Unlucky Town trudged off after their fourth straight defeat, but will quickly have the chance to get back on track when they take on Fleetwood this Tuesday.
