Gresley 3 Warrington Town 1

DESPITE taking the lead Warrington Town’s promotion hopes suffered a major setback as they went down 3-1 at Gresley.
Town started brightly, with the re-introduced Graeme Mitchell starting off particularly brightly, forcing the home keeper Dave Clarke into an early save and scuffing an effort on goal.
It was no surprise when Town took the lead in the 13th minute through striker Lee Thompson, whose rocket from the edge of the box flew into the roof of the net, following good work by Phil Mitchell.
Town, sadly, only held the lead for four minutes when David Blenkinsopp, capitalised on a mistake in the Town defence to fire past Danny Morton and into the roof of the net.
Graeme Mitchell was next to go close when his 35 yard effort was narrowly tipped over by Clarke. Coyne went close for Town, flashing a header narrowly wide of the target, from a Steve Smith free kick. Morton denied Blenkinsopp once again and the teams went in at 1-1 at the break.
Gresley started quickest in the second half and indeed, went close to scoring in the 59th minute, when captain Jamie Hood blasted over from 12 yards following a goalmouth scamble. Four minutes later the home side took the lead, when Colin McAllister put a bullet header past his own keeper Morton and into the roof of the net. Gresley were now well in command and increased their lead further shortly after when Blenkinsopp saw his shot squeeze under Morton and into the net. Morton denied Blenkinsopp his hat trick shortly afterwards with a smart double save at his near post.
