TEENAGER Emily Foster has been raising awareness and raising money for the Warrington White Ribbon Campaign against domestic violence.
Emily, aged 17 from Fearnhead, handed over more than £50 raised at Warrington Collegiate to Cheshire’s Police & Crime Commissioner John Dwyer.
The annual campaign highlights the current extent of domestic abuse and calls on men, women and young people to take action. It is an international effort primarily aimed at men and boys, encouraging them to pledge that they will never commit, condone or remain silent about abuse of women.
Emily, who has recently completed her National Citizenship Service Aware, says, “I first became aware of the White Ribbon Campaign when I was taking part in a ‘Take over Day’ at Warrington Borough Council. The idea is that you take over another person’s job for a day and I was stepping into the Assistant Chief Executive’s role, Katherine Fairclough. My overwhelming feeling was—‘It needs stopping’ and so I decided to sell white ribbons at college and raise awareness of the campaign. It’s a serious message and one that needs to be talked about by young people in schools and colleges.”
John Dwyer, the Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, who was really impressed with Emily’s energy and enthusiasm for so important a cause, says of the White Ribbon Campaign, ‘’I’m conscious that many people suffer from domestic violence in silence and my hope is that by raising awareness through the White Ribbon Campaign will give victims the courage to come forward and seek assistance.’’
Cllr Pat Wright, executive board member for health, wellbeing and adult services, adds, “Domestic abuse affects one in four women and one in six men at some stage in their lives and it can have harmful effects on their children. We are absolutely committed to tackling this in Warrington and are once again asking men, women and young people to join us in the fight by wearing a white ribbon to show that they believe domestic abuse is wrong and will not be tolerated.”
