Danny's mercy mission to Cape Town

A WARRINGTON man has returned from a trip of a lifetime where he helped to build new homes and futures for vulnerable families in South Africa.
Danny Cleaton, from Chapelford Village, spent seven days working on a project in Cape Town.
A marketing manager with plant hire company Speedy at Newton-le-Willows, Danny went on the trip organised by the firm’s nominated charity, Habitat for Humanity, building a brand new integrated community.
Nearly nine million South Africans live in inadequate housing in vast informal townships where residents often live in overcrowded shacks pieced together with cardboard, corrugated iron, scraps of wood and plastic.
Danny said: “South Africa is probably the most enchanting and inspiring country I have ever visited. It was a very humbling and rewarding experience.
“Some of our volunteer tasks included mixing mortar, putting up window panes and door frames, pouring cement floor slabs and moving bricks and mortar. Ultimately we completely immersed ourselves in a new culture, while helping families build a new life.”
Sandy Muir, the Habitat for Humanity team leader who also went on the trip, said: “The trip was certainly a real eye opener for the team and they were able to see the massive difference they made to helping transform families’ lives. It was a fantastic opportunity for every individual to take action and turn a family’s life around.”
Danny is hoping to raise over £2,500 for Habitat for Humanity – the international charity that has helped more than three million people to renovate, repair or build more than 800,000 homes since it was formed in 1976.
