Facebook fly-tipper fined after dumping waste at two locations

A man who carried out fly-tipping at two sites in Warrington after responding to requests on facebook to dispose of waste for a fee, has been fined £800 and ordered to pay more than £1,000 in costs and compensation by the town’s magistrates.

Dale Curran, 31, of Ashley Close, Grappenhall and Thelwall, was fined after dumped waste was found fly-tipped close to Sankey Valley Park and at Bennett’s Recreation Ground in Poulton South.
The council’s environmental crime team were able to trace both incidents to Curran who, after responding to requests from members of the public on Facebook, had taken the waste for a fee, with it later being found dumped.
Curran pleaded guilty at Warrington Magistrates Court on October 7 to three offences of fly-tipping, illegally transporting controlled waste, and a failure of a duty of care.
He was fined £800, in addition to costs of £772.50, a victim surcharge of £167.18 and a compensation order of £126.18 for the clearing costs at Bennett’s Recreation Ground for the fly-tipping offence. He expressed regret for his actions and stated that he would not do it again.
This is the latest of a number of actions taken against fly-tippers by the council, with 12 fines being issued for fly-tipping related offences within the past month.
Cllr Judith Guthrie said: “This is another successful conviction of a fly-tipping offence in Warrington, and one which shows that we hold fly-tippers accountable for their actions. The number of fines issued for fly-tipping offences should be a serious deterrent to anybody considering illegally disposing of their rubbish.
“I would remind people that they must ensure anyone who takes their waste is authorised and has a permit to do so. Do not use social media to find people to take waste away without first checking that they are authorised to take it. Always request a transfer note with the details of what is being taken and who is taking it, as if it ends up fly-tipped, it could be you that ends up in trouble.”
