Volunteers collect 62 bags of rubbish during nine mile litter picking marathon

COMMUNITY litter pickers from Clean Up My Community Warrington are wondering if they have created a litter picking record, after collecting 62 bags of rubbish covering nine miles in 12 hours.

To celebrate Keep Britain Tidy’s Big September Clean the group carried out a marathon litter pick starting at 6am in Whittle Hall, crossing over central Warrington to Grappenhall, where they finished at 6pm.
They were blessed with the most glorious Autumn weather.
One fo the organisers Tony Dixon said: “The volunteers on today’s litter pick gave their time and energy freely and willingly. The day was active walking and talking and was a lot of fun.
“Thank you everyone. Well done. We gathered a total of 62 bags of litter Over a route of about 9 miles in 12 hours.
“Is this a Warrington record?
He added: “We all discovered (and uncovered) some beautiful parts of our town in the process. We were all grateful for the encouragement from members of the public along the route.
“The smiles in the pictures say it all. I can’t praise the volunteers highly enough. As they say, “not all heroes wear capes”.
Tony added: “Even as Warrington’s population climbs above 200,000, this shows how a small group of local people who care about their local environment can make a significant difference to neighbourhoods throughout the town. We would all love to do something similar again.
“Although we are currently facing a second Covid wave and restricted to a small number of volunteers working together (current KBT rules specify distanced pods of six volunteers) we hope that other small group events will follow.
“In the New Covid era this “small group relay” approach allowed co-ordinated small groups to make a big impact on our enlarging town.

The group also raised over £200 to help towards purchasing equipment for future litter picks.
