Plan to extend 19th century cottage in Green Belt

PLANS to extend a mid-19th century cottage overlooking the Bridgewater Canal on Green Belt land at Grappenhall should be rejected, according to Warrington planning chiefs.

The scheme, involving Swiss Cottage, Canal Side, Grappenhall, comes before the borough council’s development management committee on Wednesday.
It involves demolition of an existing detached garage and construction of a part-single-storey part-two storey extension.
Planning officers say the scheme should be refused because it would have an unacceptable impact on the openness of the Green Belt and would cause some harm to the Grappenhall Conservation Area and would bring no public benefit to outweigh that harm.

Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council has not objected to the scheme and borough councillor Mike Biggin supports it. He believes the extension would give the building a more cohesive design and appearance. No objections have been received from neighbours.
However, the borough’s conservation officer is opposed to the proposals on the grounds they would would have a detrimental impact on the character and appearance of the original dwelling and the character and appearance of the conservation area.
