UPDATED: ON a bad night for the party across many parts of the country Labour lost in Warrington South while holding on in the North with a vastly reduced majority.

Conservative Andy Carter defeated Labour’s Faisal Rashid, who had been MP for the past two years by a majority of 2010.

Speaking after his victory Andy said: “It has been a whirlwind six weeks campaigning across the whole of Warrington South speaking to thousands of people and I am delighted they have put their trust in me.

“We have now got to get on and deliver Brexit.”

He added that one of his priorities, following feedback on the doorstep, was protecting the green belt in Warrington South.

Meanwhile in the North Charlotte Nichols held off a strong challenge from Conservative Wendy Maisey with a majority of just 1,509 compared to a Labour majority of over 9,000 when Helen Jones was last elected in 2017.

Charlotte said she was “over the moon” after holding the seat of former Warrington North MP Helen Jones, who had reprsented the area for 22 years before announcing her retirement ahead of the snap General Election.

She said she wasn’t taking any ones votes for granted following a tough election campaign.

“My priority here is for the people of Warrington North. I will be getting back out meeting people and speaking to them to see what they want me to deliver for the area.”
