A 10 mile tailback following an accident on the M6 caused lengthy traffic delays across Warrington during rush hour this morning.

The accident closed one lane of the M6 northbound between junction 20 at Lymm and 21 at Woolston, causing queues of nearly an hour back to junction 19 near Knutsford.

Meanwhile strong winds and heavy rain on the Thelwall Viaduct was causing slow moving traffic.

Long delays are being reported across Warrington, including Appleton, Stockton Heath, Great Sankey, Callands, Chapelford and around the town centre.

Shortly after 8.10am firefighters were called to reports of a car being on its side following a collision on the M6 northbound, between junctions 21 and 21A.

On arrival the crews found that the collision involved a heavy goods vehicle and a small car.

Nothing was on fire and no-one was trapped in the car, which was on its side on the hard shoulder.

A slip road was closed by Highways England as emergency services worked at the scene.

Firefighters assessed a female casualty, who was later handed over to the care of paramedics, and made the scene safe.

Firefighters were in attendance for more than 15 minutes.
