BIRCHWOOD High School, Warringtron, has become a member of an elite group of schools who can display the Eco Schools Green Flag for commitment to making the school a greener environment.

The flag was awarded after head boy Luke Richardson, 15, and deputy head boy Pedro Santos, 15, met with an external eco inspector to showcase the school’s eco-projects.

In his report, the inspector said Birchwood pupils showed excellent commitment, leadership and passion towards the eco-school’s project and as a result awarded the Green Flag, which is the highest award which only three per cent of schools hold.

Just before the end of last term the school managed to fill 198 bags for paper recycling.

A school spokesperson said: “This was a massive achievement and stopped about three tonnes of waste going to landfill. It also saved our school over £1,000 in waste fees!”
