Warrington is set to receive £25 million as part of the government’s new £3.6bn Town Fund to develop and implement regeneration plans.
The money which has been ring fenced for Warrington can be used to boost skills, provide vital digital and cultural infrastructure and is designed to drive growth through town regeneration.
Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Warrington South, Andy Carter commented, “I’m absolutely delighted that after weeks of lobbying Government Ministers at every opportunity Warrington has the chance to get up to £25m for regeneration. We’ve missed out on funding before but this time we have cash ring fenced and we can now work together to improve the town – this could be a game changer!”
Town Deal money is about ensuring prosperity and opportunity are available to everyone in this country, not just those living in cities like London or or the South East. Warrington is one of 45 towns in the Northern Powerhouse area where the Government has made a commitment to level up living standards.
Andy added: “When I was selected as the prospective Conservative MP I committed to speaking up for the constituency because Warrington wasn’t getting its fair share of support. There’s so much we need to do, in particular with healthcare and a new hospital but I am delighted that Government is taking action and giving our town the support it needs with this Town Deal”.
The government will soon publish a prospectus to guide towns through the process and set eligibility criteria for funding.
Local Government Secretary, Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP, said: “Ensuring that prosperity and opportunities are available to everyone in this country, not just those in London or our biggest cities, is at the heart of the mission of this government.
“We want to level-up our great towns, raising living standards and ensuring they can thrive with transformative investment in transport, technology, skills and culture.
“I will now work with local people from the 100 communities announced today to agree proposals to invest up to £25 million in each place. I hope these deals will provide the investment and the impetus for long-term renewal ensuring each town can look to the future with a new optimism.”
