PLANNING chiefs at Warrington have given the go-ahead for a former butcher’s shop at Orford to be converted into a hot food takeaway – despite protests from nearby residents.
Members of the development management committee approved the change of use in Poplars Avenue.
Eleven residents had opposed the scheme and local councillor John Kerr-Brown also expressed concern..
The objectors argued that there are already too many takeaway food shops in the area and an additional one would cause smells, late night noise and disturbance, litter, increased traffic and people loitering in the area.
Cllr Kerr-Brown said the council has a healthy eating strategy and that the committee should take account of this in reaching a decision.
Planning officers acknowledged that takeaways provide a popular service for local communities but that too many could have a detrimental impact on the overall vitality of a local centre.
However they felt there was a variety of shops in the area and that changing the use of the shop to a takeaway could actually increase the vitality of the area.
