Are plastics the destroyer or saviour of our planet?

ARE plastics the destroyer or saviour of our planet?  Could we ban plastics completely?

These are just a couple of the questions that will be explored by internationally acknowledged Professor Averil MacDonald OBE, in an exciting one-off public lecture at the Pyramid and Parr Hall in Warrington, 15 November 2018, 7-8pm.

Bookings are now open for this free event, which forms part of Daresbury Laboratory’s ‘Talking Science’ programme of inspirational talks for the general public, which this year is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

So what could a world free of plastics look like?

A return to paper bags for our shopping and grease proof paper for our cheese would certainly reduce the amount of ‘single use plastic’ and litter in our oceans.

Professor MacDonald’s talk will consider this, along with the surprising things that plastics can, and have done for us. She will also question whether plastics are as bad as they are painted in the media, as well why biodegradable plastic could be the worst alternative option possible.

Wendy Cotterill, Senior Pubic Engagement Officer at STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory, and organiser of the Talking Science programme, said: “Plastics in our environment is an emotive and controversial topic, so this is a fantastic opportunity to gain a deeper understanding into the many complexities of this matter.

“It’s a great feeling to be bringing our Talking Science lecture to Warrington, in celebration of our 20th year, and to be welcoming the inspirational Professor MacDonald to help mark this exciting milestone with us.”

Tickets are free, but booking is essential.  For details on this event, and further information on Daresbury Laboratory’s Talking Science programme, please see the STFC Talking Science webpage.

Bookings open six weeks in advance of each lecture, with confirmation of the venue location and travel information at the website.
