Rampant Yellows stick five past Lancaster

WARRINGTON Town made it a perfect response to last week’s defeat against Stourbridge with a 5-1 thrashing of Lancaster.

In the seven days since being humbled by the same score at Cantilever Park, Paul Carden’s men have now picked up back-to-back wins in impressive fashion.

This was one of their most accomplished displays of the season, returning loanee Evan Gumbs freeing up Sean Williams to play a key role.

Two well taken goals from James Barrigan and Liam Goulding, both their first for the club, were added to after the break by Williams, Caleb Richards and Jamie McDonald.

Gumbs, who arrived earlier in the week on a month deal from Tranmere, shielded the back four all night and they were given something to protect as early as three minutes, when Barrigan lofted James McCarten’s through ball over the goalkeeper.

Warrington looked comfortable in their new system and almost doubled their lead on 21 minutes when McCarten glanced Williams’ free-kick goalwards.

A second goal did come 10 minutes from the break, the excellent Josh Hine running direct through midfield and putting a sublime ball through for Goulding, who finished well across the ‘keeper. It was the second successive game that the Yellows had scored from right back, following Shaun Beeley’s cracker at Rushall on Saturday.

Barrigan was a constant threat down the left and he had two chances to extend the lead further before half time, one a shot that was dragged across goal and the other a header off a Hine cross from the right.

Lancaster steadied the ship in the early stages of the second half, and had a half chance when a corner was only partially cleared and a shot was fizzed over the bar.

It mattered little on 63 minutes when Williams fired home a cracking low volley from 20 yards after Rory McKeown’s cross had been headed out to him on the edge.

Warrington’s dominance was perhaps best highlighted by their response to a consolation goal by Lancaster, scored by Oliver Wood, which was followed less than 60 seconds by a fourth goal for the Yellows, scored by Richards.

The tireless McDonald got the goal his efforts deserved on his home debut, and with it he became the fourth player on the night to score their first goal for the club.

Warrington are next in action at home to Whitby Town on Saturday.
