PENKETH Library is to host a month long celebration to mark National Poetry Day next month.
Library staff and Friends of Penketh Library (FOPL) have teamed up to provide a whole of host of poetry themed activities in the run up to the national awareness day, which takes place on
Thursday September 28.
National Poetry Day is an annual celebration that inspires people throughout the UK to enjoy, discover and share poems.
It was founded in 1994 by the charity, Forward Arts Foundation, whose mission is to celebrate excellence in poetry and increase its audience.
The celebrations in Penketh start on Saturday September 2 with the launch of a poem writing competition for 7–11 year olds.
There will also be a display at the library, where readers can share their favourite poems – they can be handed into the library directly or via FOPL’s Facebook page. All entries must be submitted by Saturday September 23.
On Wednesday September 27, the library will host a Poetry Fun Session for all ages, with activities including pop-up poetry, make your own poetry themed bookmarks and Oulip, a poetry game, on offer between 3.45-4.45pm.
The following day, which is National Poetry Day, FOPL will be running mini poetry, rhymes and craft activities within the library.
Susan Morris, lead LiveWire advisor at Penketh Library, said: “Everyone is invited to join in to celebrate their love of poetry, whether that be by attending one of our events or sharing their favourite poem.
“I like lots of poems, but my favourite has to be ‘It’s Warning’ by Jenny Joseph – which I’ll be sharing with library users.”
During the week in which National Poetry Day take places, all libraries across Warrington will be providing free access to the National Poetry Day eBook.
