A 39-year-old man who sparked a major rescue operation after jumping into the River Mersey at Sankey Bridges, Warrington, last night has been charged with assaulting a police officer.
As exclusively reported by warrington-worldwide last night emergency services, including police and fire, were called to the banks of the Mersey shortly after 8pm following reports of a man swimming in the Mersey near Saxon Park.
The police helicopter was also deployed to the scene as part of the rescue operation and police eventually spotted the man in brambles near the side of the river.
It is alleged the 39-year-old man from Burtonwood, assaulted a police officer who was rushing to his aid
The man has since been charged with police assault and will appear in North Cheshire Magistrates court on July 18.
