Green light for health service

NHS Warrington has performed highly in the first year of “world class commissioning” – a ground-breaking health programme designed to deliver significant benefits for local people.
Using a “traffic light” system of assessment, Warrington has been given a “green” rating in 10 out of 14 key areas of service and “amber” in the other four.
It has not been shown the “red” light in any area of service.
As it is the first year of world class commissioning, Primary Care Trusts (PCTs)

were not expected to score highly.
NHS Warrington chief executive Andrew Burgess said: “We are very pleased with such a positive and constructive report. Giving consideration to the fact that Warrington PCT was deemed not Fit for Purpose some two years ago, the report acknowledges the significant progress we have made to now being a well governed, ambitious and strong performing organisation.
“Whilst we acknowledge the achievements identified in the report, we also welcome the valuable insight it has provide in terms of recommendations for future development, many of which we have already made much progress since the assessment.
“As the leader of the local NHS we will continue to drive forward, with our providers, improvements to ensure that the people of Warrington receive the best possible health services”.
World class commissioning takes best practice from around the world to help PCTs match health and care services more closely to local needs, now and in the future.
It helps PCTs work with local partners – such as local authorities, GPs and hospitals – as well as the public more widely, to understand these needs and to improve services for local people.
This aims to provide a better quality of care, improved health and well-being and a reduction in health inequalities.
The assessment of NHS Warrington’s progress over the first year of working on the programme reviews the organisation’s performance in three key areas: its progress on addressing local health priorities, its commissioning capabilities and the effectiveness of its management arrangements.
It also highlights the organisation’s strengths around governance and board leadership.
