WARRINGTON Trading Standards are warning people not to employ traders who “cold call” at their homes and offer to carry out work on the roof following a number of recent incidents in the town.
Warrington residents have reported cold callers offering initial quotes for gutter-cleaning of around £20 – but the cost soon escalates when the traders claim to have found other things wrong with the roof.
Some residents have refused to have the extra work carried out but say they have felt pressurised by the tradesmen.
On a number of occasions the traders have claimed to be working and pointed out properties where work is actually being carried out although they have no connection to the property.
Trading Standards tips:
• Do not agree to any work with tradespeople who cold call at your door.
• Get three quotes from reputable companies for any work done – remembering that the best recommendation is a personal one from someone who has had work done.
• Get a fixed price and be specific about what work is to be done.
• Get everything in writing, including the company details, price and work to be done.
• Report any suspicious traders to Trading Standards via 03454040506 or to the Police on 101.
