92 per cent of children offered “first choice” primary school

THE number of children in Warrington offered their first choice of primary school has significantly increased.
New figures show that, out of 2,540 children who will be starting at Warrington’s primary schools in September, 2,328, have had their “first preference” met.
This equates to 92 per cent – an increase from last year’s figure of 90.5 per cent.
A further 122 (five per cent) of pupils have been offered their second choice, with 36 (one per cent) being offered their third choice.
There has also been a reduction in the number of children failing to be offered any of their choices. Fifty four pupils (two per cent) had none of their preferences met, a decrease of 0.5 per cent from 2016.
The borough council’s lead member for children’s services, Cllr Jean Carter (pictured) said: “As Warrington continues to grow and thrive, it’s vital we invest in the future success of our borough. That means investing in our children. Meeting the needs of young people and their families when it comes to school choices is an important part of that.
“I’m delighted that the number of children in Warrington being offered their first choice has increased this year. Gaining a place at the right primary school can, of course, get children’s education off to the best possible start. That’s why it’s great news for our borough when we are
able to accommodate a high number of first preferences.”
