WARRINGTON-based water company United Utilities has joined forces with Cheshire Police in bid to crack down on the number of bogus callers in the area.
There has been an increase in the number bogus caller and distraction burglary type incidents in recent weeks, which in many cases has seen elderly residents targeted.
The two organisations are now coming together in response to this to offer advice to residents and combat the number of victims in the county.
Superintendent Jon Betts said: “Our officers are doing excellent work in detecting and preventing distraction burglaries.
“Despite this there are still criminals who are prepared to prey on some of the most vulnerable members of society to make a profit.
“In many cases the culprits use the same method to gain entry into houses – often saying they are from the Water Board – before distracting the home owner and stealing cash and property.
“The offenders can be persistent, but by taking a few simple steps, residents can reduce their chances of becoming victims of this type of crime.
“I would advise everyone to ensure their windows and doors are locked, even when they are in the house.
“You should always use a door chain when answering the door and if someone calls at your house make sure you ask for identification before letting them in.
“If you are still suspect they may not be genuine, ring the company the caller claims to be from or contact the police.”
United Utilities Extra Care Services Manager, Jean Leslie added: “These days bogus callers can be extremely convincing and often seem to have a plausible excuse for gaining access to the house.
“If they see any road works nearby they often take the chance to pretend they are working for us or other utility companies.
“We would just ask people to be extra vigilant and take the time to properly check identification of callers, particularly if there is work taking place near their homes.
