EDUCATION watchdogs have ruled that a Warrington primary school “requires improvement.”
But progress has begun to improve at Winwick CE Primary during the past year, with good progress in reading and more pupils working within expected levels in writing and mathematics.
Some are on track to do better than expected for their age by the end of the year, according to inspectors from Ofsted.
The inspectors say the school requires improvement because pupils’ progress is not consistently good.
Over time, pupils have attained only expected levels in English and maths.
Teaching throughout the school is not consistently good, including in the Early Years Foundation Stage.
The quality of marking varies and does not have enough impact on pupils work and monitoring and evaluation of teaching and learning have not been rigorous enough.
The inspectors state that pupils behave well, are always polite and well mannered and their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is good. Attendance is above average.
Headteacher Ian Price is praised for his commitment to bringing stability and improvement to the school, as it the involvement of the governing body. Together they show they are fully capable of driving the school forward.
The inspectors acknowledge that the head has been in post for only one year, following a period of unsettled leadership.
Mr Price said: “We are fully committed and working hard to ensure we continue to make progress in order to achieve all our goals and aims for our pupils. Many recent changes have resulted in positive outcomes and we continue to aim higher, challenge under-performance where it exists and deliver the highest standards for our children.”
Chairman of governors David Hansley said: “Governors and staff are working hard to ensure improvement continues within the school. As a team we have a shared vision of continued progress, high attainment and greater overall success for the school.”
