More home frustration for drawing Warrington Town

WARRINGTON Town’s frustrations at home continued as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Lancaster City.

Just as against Workington on Tuesday night, the Yellows fell behind only to turn things around to lead, before conceding an equaliser that consigned them to a fourth draw at home in six attempts.

Trailing to Dylan Thompson’s scrappy opener, Ben Elliott headed home his first goal for the club early in the second half and then a lovely chip by Reece Daly put them in front.

But Charlie Bailey nodded home from Jules Flanagan’s cross to secure a point for the visitors, who ended a seven match losing run against the Yellows.

Lancaster had the better of the opening quarter and created the first meaningful chance, Mateusz Hewelt getting down well to save from Steven Yawson.

The Yellows were dealt a blow when forward Ewan Bange was forced off injured on 18 minutes, shortly before Josh Doherty’s in-swinging corner was shovelled away from under his own crossbar by Brad Kelly.

Flanagan fired over the bar from the edge of the box following a poor clearance, before Lancaster took the lead on 35 minutes.

Sam Bailey’s free-kick from the right caused problems in the box, and as the ball bounced around, Thompson got there to scramble it home from yards out.

The closest the Yellows got in the first half was from two Callum Edwards shots late on, one of which squirmed through the grasp of Kelly and went just wide of the post.

But the hosts came out strongly in the second half and the hard-working Elliott finally got the goal he’s been waiting for, rising high to head in from Doherty’s right-foot cross from the left.

Edwards could have made it two moments later when he was released by Lewis Earl following a driving run and perfectly weighted through ball, only for Edwards to screw his shot wide.

The second goal did come on 65 minutes, good work by Elliott setting Edwards away and he released Daly who saw his first shot saved, but then as bodies scrambled around him, he had the vision to lift the ball over the ‘keeper and in.

It would prove to be a frustrating outcome for the Yellows though, as six minutes later they conceded the equaliser, Flanagan allowed to cut in from the left and he measured a cross that Bailey headed home.

It could have been worse for the hosts but for a double save by Hewelt, denying James Craig and then bravely pouncing at the feet of Dom Lawson on the rebound.

Their chance came in the dying stages, a teasing ball by Elliott just couldn’t be hooked inside the post by Jack Goodwin.

The Yellows now have six away games in their next seven league outings, starting with a trip to Bamber Bridge on Tuesday night.
