Yellows pegged back at home by Workington

WARRINGTON Town dropped points from a winning position for a third time at home this season as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Workington.

Trailing to Brad Carroll’s opener, the Yellows turned the game on its head with two goals in the last three minutes of the first half, only to be pegged back 15 minutes from the end.

In incessant first half rain, Carroll diverted home a low corner on 12 minutes to open the scoring as the Reds enjoyed the better of the play.

The only other chance of note saw Alex McNally’s header deflected wide and it took a first half substitute to light the game up again.

Callum Edwards, on for Zayn Sadiq, fired home from 20 yards out on 43 minutes and then Ewan Bange took on the ball in to the box and slotted home left-footed.

Both sides had moments in the early parts of the second half without creating anything clear cut, the excellent Harry McHugh combining with Alex McNally to get in to the box before seeing his improvised backheel cleared in the goalmouth.

McHugh shot wide from the edge before substitute Ben Elliott had two shots from a similar position in the D, the second of which was fumbled by the ‘keeper and although Reece Daly got to the rebound first, Daniel Eccles made himself big to keep it out.

The equaliser came through the hard working Brennan Dickenson, who dropped in to midfield after skipper Carroll went off injured in the first half. He took the ball left and then chopped back in on his right and guided a shot in to the far corner.

There were half chances late on, Keelan Leslie one of Workington’s two impressive full-backs, getting in a crucial header on his own line to deny Rio Hawkins, as just like against Cleethorpes and Emley, the Yellows dropped points.
