The Giant Axe proved an unhappy hunting ground for Warrington Rylands once again as Lancaster City secured a 1–0 victory on Tuesday evening.
Rylands travelled up the M6 full of confidence following their opening-day victory over FC United of Manchester, while the Dolly Blues were looking to bounce back from a 4–1 defeat at Ashton United.
The game began at a quick pace, with both sides moving the ball around accurately. The first half was an end-to-end affair, but neither team was able to take control for any sustained period. It took until the 40th minute for the first shot on target.
It was more of the same after the break, but Lancaster took the lead when Jawad Jebrin was dispossessed in midfield. Jim Craig took full advantage, unleashing a 25-yard effort that curled into the top corner, beating Luke Pilling for the first time this season.
Rylands continued to utilise the long ball, a tactic that had proved highly effective against the Manchester side, but the home defence was equal to the challenge.
Despite a late push from Warrington, Lancaster held on to their advantage, with all 11 players working hard to protect their goal. With just five minutes remaining, Rylands came agonisingly close when an effort struck the crossbar, before the follow-up was cleared off the line.
However, the equaliser would not come, and Lancaster held on for all three points.
Rylands face another tough test on Saturday when they travel to newly promoted Bury, who are among the favourites to top the league.
