Rylands slip to rare home defeat

WARRINGTON Rylands fell to only their second defeat of the season at the The Quickline Logistics Arena as lowly Cleethorpes Town scored the only goal of the match.

Two sides came head-to-head at Gorsey Lane with contrasting pressures — one with little to lose and the other protecting a play-off position. Ultimately, a single and controversial goal from Callum Ainley proved enough to secure victory for the visitors, with Rylands goalkeeper Luke Pilling arguing he had been fouled in the build-up.
Rylands came close to an equaliser just before the half-time whistle. Harrison Wood played the ball into the path of Ben Hardcastle, but his effort struck the crossbar and bounced back into play.

The pace and power of Alex Kiwomya caused constant problems for the Owls’ defence, although too often his dangerous crosses into the box went unanswered as team-mates struggled to keep up. This may be a reflection of a small squad coping with a demanding run of fixtures across multiple competitions.

Manager Neil Reynolds had already suggested fatigue was evident when Whitby Town claimed a point last week at the The Towbar Express Stadium, and Saturday’s performance suggested the issue remains.
Despite the defeat, Rylands still occupy the fourth play-off position. The damage could have been worse had Gainsborough Trinity and Stockton Town not also dropped points. However, both sides have two games in hand on Warrington and could yet push the Blues out of contention if they capitalise.
Reynolds remains confident his side can respond.
“As a group we’ve had an off-day today and we have to congratulate the opposition,” he said.
“This has been a positive season. We’re sitting fourth in the league, we’re competing against some fantastic sides, and we’re not looking for favours or relying on anyone else slipping up.
“There are seven games left in the league and we’ll be facing some strong teams. At the end of the season we’ll be where we’ll be, but I have full belief in that group.”
Reynolds also highlighted the absence of key experience in midfield, with Charlie Munro unavailable. Hardcastle is still not fully fit, while Wood has been balancing commitments with Blackburn Rovers, including involvement in the FA Cup. Heavy pitches and a packed schedule have also taken their toll.
“Yes, there is fatigue, but it’s the same for every team,” Reynolds added.
“We will rest, we’ll recover and we’ll go again.”
Rylands’ next match is an away trip to Leek Town, who are enjoying an impressive run of form. Like Cleethorpes, they sit comfortably in mid-table and will present another difficult challenge.
