Wolves push hard to nearly spoil Hull KR party

HULL KR were crowned Super League League Leaders’ but only after being given a surprise scare by Warrington Wolves.

Most would have been expecting a procession for the top side with Warrington’s current form, and despite also being without a few senior bodies, the Wolves stuck it to Rovers and at times had the crowd worrying they might not get the party they were expecting.

Two excellent Danny Walker 40/20s set up Warrington some nice field position early on, and they opened the scoring when Josh Thewlis caught Marc Sneyd’s kick unopposed to score.

After Walker’s second 40/20, Cai Taylor-Wray thought he’d scored Wolves’ second try when he danced through a gap on the left, only for it be ruled out by the video referee for obstruction.

You could sense the anxiety in the home crowd, but they would have felt better when Tyrone May ghosted through to restore parity and then Noah Booth crossed twice in the left corner before half time for 16-6.

Arthur Mourgue had an early second half try disallowed for a double movement, before Warrington turned the game on its head with a sprited fight back.

Young half-back Ewan Irwin’s short kick sat up for Sam Stone to touch down and then Adam Holroyd crashed on to a short ball to touchdown after a Mourgue knock on had given them the ball in good position to level things up at 16-all.

And then they took the lead off a scrum play, an excellent fend and offload by Matt Dufty finished off acrobatically in the corner by Josh Thewlis.

But Hull KR got the win they craved, Mourgue breaking with a kick return to go 70 metres and beat the chase of Taylor-Wray, before May made sure with four minutes to play.
