WARRINGTON South MP Sarah Hall visited Evelyn Street Primary School to present pupils with their official Eco-Schools Green Flag and to celebrate the school’s recent Gold Award from the Woodland Trust’s Green Tree Schools programme.

The Eco-Schools Green Flag is an internationally recognised accreditation awarded annually to schools that embed environmental awareness into school life and empower young people to take the lead on sustainability projects. Evelyn Street’s pupil-led initiatives included litter picks, biodiversity work, and embedding climate education across the curriculum.
The school also earned Gold status through the Woodland Trust’s Green Tree Schools Award, which recognises schools that champion outdoor learning, nature protection and sustainability. As a forest school, Evelyn Street is home to ‘Owl Wood’ a dedicated woodland space that allows pupils to explore the natural world and connect with the environment.
These dual achievements place Evelyn Street among a growing number of schools in the UK leading the way on sustainability and health promotion, helping children build habits that support both the planet and their personal wellbeing.
During her visit, Sarah also observed the school’s supervised toothbrushing programme in action. The scheme recently expanded by the Government to improve oral health in areas of deprivation teaches young children about dental hygiene through structured, daily brushing sessions at school.
Mrs Hall also praised the work of dedicated staff members including Mrs Tobin and Mrs Tonge, whose commitment to inclusion has helped ensure all children feel supported, valued, and able to thrive.
Ms Hall said: “It was a real joy to visit Evelyn Street and see how they’re giving children the tools to care for themselves and their world.
“From Owl Wood to the Green Flag award, the school is helping pupils build a deep connection with nature and a sense of responsibility for the future. These awards are well-earned and reflect the passion and dedication of everyone at the school.
“I was also glad to see the toothbrushing programme in action. It’s a small, practical step that makes a big difference, especially in areas where child dental health is a real concern.
“Schools like Evelyn Street remind us what’s possible when we invest in children’s wellbeing, not just academically, but in every part of their lives.”
