ST ELPHIN’S Church at Howley – Warrington Parish Church – is the oldest place of worship in the town.
A church has stood on its site since 675 when the area was the original centre of Warrington.
It was rebuilt in 1156 and underwent a major restoration in 1770.
It was shelled by Cromwell’s forces during the Civil War and suffered serious damage. The marks of cannon balls are said to still be present.
It was restored again in 1850 when its impressive spire – the third highest parish church spire in England – was added.
It is without doubt, Warrington’s most iconic building and a centre for the town’s public life.
