PICKETS were out at the Unilver factory in Liverpool Road, Warrington today as workers took part in a strike over proposed changes to their pension scheme.
The industrial action started last night (Thursday) and follows a 3-1 vote in favour of the strike by members of the GMB union at the plant.
Spokesman Allan Black said the company’s plan to close the final salary pension scheme would affect some 5,000 Unilever staff across the country.
“This strike is just one of a number planned and shows that pensions are not just a matter of concern for public sector workers – they are shared by workers in the private sector too.”
The union says it will be having talks with other unions about possible strike action.
Similar strike action was taking place at a Unilever plant in Norwich.
The action is due to end at 6pm tonight – but the union has warned of further similar strikes.
A spokesman for the Unite union said its members at Unilever had voted by more than 8-1 in favour of strike action.
